Nicholas Serenati, Ph.D. has spent his life exploring a question that sits at the center of leadership, education, sport, and human performance:

What allows people to become the very best version of themselves?

That question has guided a journey spanning competitive athletics, academic scholarship, higher education leadership, media production, entrepreneurship, coaching, and organizational development. While those experiences may appear diverse on the surface, they have always been connected by a common pursuit: understanding how people learn, grow, perform, adapt, and lead.

Born and raised in Maryland, Serenati spent his formative years between Prince George’s County and St. Mary’s County, communities that helped shape his values, work ethic, and competitive spirit. Growing up in Southern Maryland provided an early appreciation for discipline, resilience, community, and the importance of earning opportunities rather than expecting them.

He graduated from St. Mary’s Ryken High School (1997), where athletics became an increasingly important part of his life. Soccer, in particular, offered more than competition. It became an education in leadership, accountability, preparation, and personal responsibility. Long before he would enter a classroom as a professor or stand on a touchline as a coach, the game was already teaching lessons that would influence the direction of his life.

Those experiences eventually led him to collegiate soccer, first at the College of Southern Maryland and later at Mount St. Mary’s University, where he competed as an NCAA Division I student-athlete. The demands of high-level competition exposed him to the realities of performance under pressure and reinforced a lesson that continues to guide his work today: talent may open doors, but growth, discipline, and decision-making determine how far someone ultimately goes.

What appeared at the time to be a journey through sport was quietly becoming something much larger.

The game had introduced him to performance.

Life would soon introduce him to perspective.

A diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia transformed the trajectory of Serenati’s life. Like many defining moments, its significance could not be fully understood in real time. What began as a battle for survival ultimately became a catalyst for deeper reflection on meaning, adversity, resilience, and the human experience.

Rather than moving away from difficult questions, Serenati moved toward them.

The experience sparked a lifelong intellectual curiosity about suffering, transformation, identity, and the ways individuals create meaning through challenge. Those questions eventually became the foundation of his scholarly work and academic pursuits, leading him into an interdisciplinary exploration of philosophy, communication, aesthetics, visual culture, spirituality, and human development.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Flagler College, a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College, and ultimately a Doctor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies from Union Institute & University. His doctoral dissertation, The Reframing of Leukemia: Metaphor, Dharma Art and Illness Experience, was nominated for the Marvin B. Sussman Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

Yet education was never simply about accumulating degrees.

It was about building a framework for understanding people.

Over the next decade, Serenati devoted himself to higher education, serving as a professor, mentor, academic leader, and program director. At Flagler College, he taught communication, media studies, documentary production, cultural theory, critical thinking, visual communication, and interdisciplinary humanities while leading Digital Media Production and Journalism programs.

Working with students from diverse backgrounds revealed a recurring truth.

People rarely transform because information is presented to them.

They transform because they are placed within environments that challenge them, support them, and expect more from them.

That realization would become one of the defining principles of his leadership philosophy.

At the same time, Serenati continued developing expertise in media production, storytelling, digital communication, and creative leadership. Over nearly two decades, he produced broadcast content, documentaries, multimedia campaigns, and digital storytelling initiatives while leading complex production environments and mentoring future media professionals.

The work reinforced another lesson that continues to influence his leadership today.

People do not simply respond to information. They respond to stories. Stories shape culture. Stories shape identity. Stories shape performance.

Eventually, the lessons from sport, education, scholarship, adversity, and storytelling began converging into a single vision.

That vision became Royal United FC.

Founded by Serenati, Royal United FC was created to challenge conventional approaches to player development. While many organizations focus primarily on outcomes, Serenati envisioned a development model centered on the complete individual.

Technical ability mattered.

Tactical understanding mattered.

Physical preparation mattered.

But leadership, confidence, communication, resilience, decision-making, and character mattered just as much.

At the center of the academy’s philosophy is a concept that has become synonymous with Serenati’s work: Soccer IQ.

The belief that intelligent players make better decisions, adapt more effectively, and ultimately perform at higher levels than players who rely solely on athleticism or technical skill.

Under his leadership, Royal United FC has grown into a respected development organization producing regional and national success while remaining committed to the long-term growth of every athlete who enters the program.

Today, Serenati’s work extends well beyond a single organization.

Through coaching, research, writing, media production, leadership development, strategic communication, and entrepreneurship, he continues building an interconnected ecosystem dedicated to helping individuals and organizations achieve meaningful growth.

His research explores performance science, tactical development, motor learning, coaching methodology, leadership, communication, and human potential. His educational work continues to bridge scholarship and application. His entrepreneurial efforts focus on creating systems that produce lasting value rather than temporary success.

Although the platforms continue to evolve, the mission remains unchanged.

To develop people.

To build systems.

To create opportunities.

To leave organizations stronger than they were found.

Nicholas Serenati does not view his life as a collection of separate careers. He views it as a single body of work—one built at the intersection of leadership, learning, performance, and service.

His long-term vision extends beyond any individual title, profession, or organization.

It is the pursuit of a legacy measured not by personal accomplishments, but by the people developed, the leaders created, the opportunities expanded, and the impact that continues long after his direct involvement.
